5 Day Tour: The Middle Atlas
Starting from: Fez Airport
Although the airport of Fez is not one of the busiest ones, this is the shortest tour we suggest you stay with us and do some visits on the way. You will see snow in winter, water plenties, everything you are not expecting to find in Morocco.
1st day – Leave Fez towards Imouzzer du Kandar, known for its cherries and the caves, still inhabited today. From there you start an inland lakes tour, Dayet Aoua, Dayet Ifrah, and Dayet Hachlaf, with beautiful rock formations, until you get to Ifrane, the so-called Moroccan Switzerland, up on the Atlas mountain, with lovely temperatures in the summertime. Continue to Azrou, surrounded by cedars and oalm oaks, for the overnight.
2nd day – leave Azrou through the Zad Pass, the highest of the Middle Atlas. Continuing south you have Midelt, a city known for the growing of apple trees. Already out of the Atlas you will go along the Ziz Gorges, where the river with the same name flows. Through Errachidia arrive at Erg Chebbi with two overnights in RESTCAMP ERGCHEBBI.
3rd day – free day to relax, to take part in activities (see the article Magical Desert Dunes for adventures and sportsmen) or to visit the nearby small cities of Merzouga, a tourist center, Erfoud, home for the Dates Festival, and Rissani, with the mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif nearby. Between these two last cities, the road goes along the oasis of Tafilalt Palm Grove. Overnight in RESTCAMP ERGCHEBBI.
4th day – go back towards the north, passing by Midelt, and then take the way unto Sefrou, a city with straight connections with the Jewish heritage and the nearby village of Bhalil, another locality known for its cave houses. Overnight in Fez.
5th day – visit the city of Fez, with its well-preserved medina, where you can find the most famous of all tanneries in Morocco, but also the new Fez where the palace Dar el-Makhzen is situated. If you visited Fez before starting this tour we suggest you take the car and visit the Jbel Tazekka National Park, with its waterfalls, caves, and seasonal lakes. Come between November and April to enjoy it the most.
